Late last year, Trayak and the Climate Collaborative (CC) teamed up to help packaging committed companies optimize their designs and make more sustainable choices. CC Packaging Committed Companies responded to a Call to Action for Trayak to model and analyze their existing package compared to a new package design. Three companies were selected for the project: Guayaki, Happy Family Organics, and REBBL.
Each company defined a packaging change they would like to make to one of their products. Data was collected for the baseline and the new design and modeled within Trayak’s Life Cycle Assessment software EcoImpact-COMPASS. The packaging changes ranged from incorporating more recycled content into various components to right-sizing the primary package and improving cube utilization/palletization.
All of the companies involved in the study saw huge benefits from small packaging changes when considered on a company level. The environmental savings were rolled up to reflect changing their product’s packaging for the annual volume. Above are the simple indicator savings each of the companies could achieve by applying these new packaging strategies.
