Third-Party Review Process
There are three main steps within the typical third-party review process at Trayak:

Data Collection and Modeling
The project kick-off usually begins with one of two methods for data collections. Either you provide Trayak with your product or packaging specifications through our data collection template, or Trayak collects the data by evaluating your product or packaging samples to determine their materials,weights, and manufacturing processes. Data modeling begins once we have collected and confirmed your data. Our modeling process involves creating custom materials and manufacturing processes for any primary data, then building your bill of materials (BOMs) in EcoImpact-COMPASS. After which we provide you with the models and initial results for your review and approval.

Supplemental Report Writing
Once the models are approved, the supplemental report is written based on the results. It details the goal and scope of the project, any assumptions or limitations in the study, and the report conclusions. Trayak’s supplemental reports meet all of the ISO standard requirements according to ISO 14040 and 14044, as well as any other standards that may be relevant to your specific project.

Critical Review
For the critical review, the supplemental report is sent to an independent reviewer or a panel of reviewers, depending on the type of report. The job of the reviewer(s) is to determine if the models and comparison are plausible, as well as ensure that all materials, manufacturing processes, industries, etc. represented by the study are represented fairly. The reviewer(s) provide comments on any areas of concern and return the report with relevant questions, which Trayak addresses before submitting for another round of review. There are typically two rounds of review, though there are cases where one round is sufficient or more than two rounds are required.

An LCA that undergoes critical review is often a more in-depth study, which can help you understand the reason behind the results. Third-party reviewed LCAs dive into the data to determine where hotspots may be coming from.

Third-party reviewed LCAs utilize sensitivity analyses to determine how well the results hold up. Sensitivity analyses are like a pressure test for your LCA models, testing different inputs to see if the same conclusions can be drawn from the analysis.
Spotlight Sustainability Efforts
Pursuing a third-party review can also help draw attention to your sustainability efforts, increasing stakeholder trust in your process and results, as your LCA will have undergone thorough review by qualified experts.
